Retreat Logistics and Protocol

What Not to Bring – No alcohol or recreational drugs are allowed. Since our purpose is to provide a supportive environment for retreat, we suggest you NOT bring computers, iPods, and other electronic devices EXCEPT for use accessing online support programs. Cell phone use is discouraged except for emergencies.

Food and Supplies Available Locally –
Most basic supplies are available locally within five miles of the retreat center. The Elephant Cloud has a good supply of foods and sundries typically found in health food stores, including organic produce, cereals, and juices, and they have a coffee shop and restaurant next door with a variety of menu items. If you need something that is not available in Crestone, it is about an hour drive to the nearby larger towns of Alamosa and Salida. Gas is available at the Elephant Cloud Market by credit card ONLY.

Bedding and Cabin Necessities – We provide bed linens, blankets, bath towels, kitchen utensils and cleaning supplies.

Shrine – Each cabin has a dedicated shrine area, but you should bring your own personal practice materials such as special thangkas, incense, prayer packets, books, etc. A zafu and zabuton are provided for sitting meditation.

Clothing –The weather in Crestone varies greatly and can be hot in summer to very cold in winter. We suggest you bring clothing you can layer as temperatures can vary 40 degrees within one day due to the 8,000 foot altitude. While it can snow anytime from October through May, usually snow accumulation is low and melts quickly due to the abundant sunshine. Check temperature averages for your reserved time and plan accordingly. The local website Crestone Weather Center is a good source for planning. Be sure to bring sturdy shoes or boots, and in fall & winter bring hats, gloves, scarves and warm layers.

Laundry – There are laundry facilities in the community house available for those in longer retreats. There is a small charge for use of the laundry.
